In stillness - a practice that stayed

By Mohan K

A journey with yoga from early practice to a deeper way of living shaping awareness, balance, and presence over time.

Introduction

Not everything that shapes us begins with intention. My journey with yoga started early, during my school days, without a clear understanding of what it truly meant. It was just something I practiced. Over time, however, it evolved into something far more meaningful—a practice that brought clarity, balance, and a deeper sense of awareness.

From Practice to Commitment

It was during my engineering years that yoga became more than just a routine. What began as a random introduction—friends pulling me into a yoga club called YUJ for Life—gradually turned into a space where I spent a significant part of my time.

The shift was subtle but important. Yoga moved from being a physical activity to a more intentional practice. Breathing, posture, and awareness were no longer separate elements—they became interconnected.

As I spent more time with the practice and the community, my role evolved as well. By the time I graduated, I had taken on the responsibility of serving as the Vice President of the club. It wasn’t just a position—it was an opportunity to contribute, guide, and stay deeply engaged with something that had started shaping my mindset.

Beyond Indoors

What began within structured sessions didn’t stay confined to them.

Over time, yoga found its way into how I experience the outdoors as well. Whether it’s reaching a summit during a trek or finding a quiet spot at a peak, I often find myself sitting down, taking a moment to pause, and simply being present.

Practicing meditation in those spaces brings a different kind of clarity—one that’s shaped by both stillness and surroundings. Occasionally, I also explore asanas in these environments, not as a performance, but as a way to stay connected to the moment.

Closing

Yoga, for me, is no longer something I “do” at a specific time or place. It has become a way of approaching things—with awareness, patience, and a sense of balance.

It started early, took shape over time, and continues to evolve—quietly, but consistently.
